Smart words, smart chords, smart clothes - Dave Lang has had a fondness for smartness since someone told him he had a smart mouth.Inspired by LouisArmstrong, Cole Porter and Lenny Bruce, Lang writes smart songs.
"Dave Lang is an original throwback to a time when subtlety and good humour meant something. A literate mind, with a touch of Tom Lehrer attached to a subversive heart. This is a show to experience.”

HOT PANDA

Hot Panda are just two boys and two girls from Edmonton trying to do the same thing they've always tried to do: play some kind of rock and roll that'll make people dance and feel happy...Simple stuff!

These kids -Maghan Campbell (drums), Chris Connelly (vocals, guitar), Catherine Hiltz (bass), and Heath Parsons (keys, accordion) - have toured so much in the past few years that their shabby van, $30 motel rooms, and stranger's floors feel more like home these days than their own beds. Since the release of their first EP (2008's Whale Headed Girl) and their subsequent signing to Vancouver's Mint Records, the band has zigged and zagged their raucous live show across North America (ok, minus Mexico, but still...) and Europe on planes, trains, and automobiles until they thought they might die!

They've snapped pictures of themselves under the Eiffel Tower, played on a stage once graced by the Beatles in Hamburg, and visited royal palaces in Vienna, all when they went on tour opening for the Von Bondies across Europe in April, 2009! They've also had wonderful times playing at festivals like SXSW in Austin, Texas, CMJ Music Marathon in New York, and North of the border at Pop Montreal, Halifax Pop Explosion, Sled Island in Calgary, and NXNE in Toronto. Along the way, they've played with lots of other bands they love, like Art Brut, The Raveonettes, Tokyo Police Club, Chad Van Gaalen, Electric 6, Crystal Antlers, and lots more. So, in short, it's been some kind of adventure!

Yet, as great adventures often go, this one suffered some moments of ugly struggle. November 2009 marked the departure of one of their founding members, shortly before the band was supposed to record their sophomore release. However, despite this sad and unsettling blow, the band kept their heads held high long enough to snag Catherine Hiltz as their new bass player/multi-instrumentalist. Hiltz's arrival, however, has majorly revitalized the band- it's a long story, but in short, Hot Panda is having fun again, and they're damn happy about it!

How Come I'm Dead? (Out on Mint Records October 12, 2010), a follow up to 2009's acclaimed Volcano...Bloody Volcano!, was written with Hiltz and recorded at Vancouver's JC/DC studios during the chaos of the 2010 Winter Olympics. It has a playful sense of humour to it, revealing the band's sense of relief and the return of ridiculous good times since Hiltz's arrival. Like Volcano, How Come I'm Dead draws inspiration from music's most random corners- the album has moments of dreamy noise, circus freak dance, heartbreaking country ballads with screeching metal guitar solos, lovely harmonies, psychadelic drones, and straight up pop/rock numbers. There's even a hip-hop track, which includes a bass scratch solo and enough f-bombs to earn them an adult content warning sticker- which tumbles directly into a grinding techno song!

WESTERN MEDICINE,CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE

In this era of globalization, ignorance and greed there are an amalgamation of ways in our western society which enable us to“ fix ourselves”. Money, therapy, drugs… ego, gluttony, self loathing… all things one can use to fill an empty soul, but what do these things give you except the feeling for a moment that you are “full”. This is where five individuals based out of Vancouver B.C decided to form a progressive hardrock-band. Naming a band can be a tricky endeavor, finding a single common denominator shared between different personalities…

Founding member “Roost” pieced the group together over the course of 2008. Through various printed/electronic musician classified adds he found and auditioned; Jake lead guitar, Matty drums, and April bass/vocals. The four had used their time in 08 to gel as a band, write dozens of songs and eventually start auditioning singers late 2008 early 2009. Sitting in a local watering hole before taking on the name, soon to be lead vocalist Kiabowsh, explained the lyrics he had written to a song received over email.

“I based the song upon our western society and how backwards it all seems to me. You don’t feel good, go to the doctor and he’ll prescribe you the newest happy pill. Had a bad day at work today? Hit up the mall and buy something for yourself that some poor kid in a third world country made for five cents a week. We keep feeding this machine based upon ego, and its burning us.” explained Kiabowsh. The song was called Western Medicine and from then on out the five would take on its identity, sarcastic in its brilliance, brash and yet intriguing.

Now at the tail end of 2010 WM has toured on various occasions throughout B.C, Van Isle, and Alberta. Recorded a five song EP which guitars and vocals where tracked at Roosts place in a spare bedroom. With sleeping bags as baffles and the room across the hall as the control room the five members hammered it out. “ If one looks at this as an album in its entirety, it becomes apparent that there is a lot to go on here. This is a tight unit well on its way to developing a unique sound and making their presence known to all.” Matt Snow, Abort Magazine. The many diverse influences of each member make for this “unique sound.” From “Rage” like riffs and progressions to the heavier more underground “Cave In” like vocals. Western Medicine is a legitimate force on the Canadian music scene.
Ferocity, passion, melody, beauty, grit – all delivered by the hands and feet of 2 people. Two people on a mission to destroy musical barriers, preconceptions and all that is mundane. BLACK THUNDER

Black Thunder was first created in the late fall of 2009. Pals Tony and Neil were taking a hike through the dense forest that covers the stony mountain range in Saskatchewan. As they gazed past trees, they only found more trees. At the final moment, when the two pals realized they had become lost, they stumbled upon a Ziegler. Often hearing stories of the giant, the two comrades never dreamt of ever seeing a Ziegler for them selves. They did not know what to do. Frightened by the size of the Ziegler, Neil finally convinced Tony that if they would ever find their way back home to Regina (the nearest city to the mountain range) they would have to approach this giant creature. As the mates slowly grew near to the Ziegler, the Ziegler notice and slowly turned his head towards them. Tony and Neil froze. As the Ziegler rotated towards the two he gradually lifted his head until the three made eye contact. Everything went quiet. Everything was still. The three just stood staring into each others' eyes. As if they had grown together from birth they knew each others’ souls. As the three stood, the sky began to grow dark. Black clouds created a ceiling over their heads. Purple lighting flickered above the sky, barely breaking through the clouds. Then it happened. A rumble that will never be forgot… Black Thunder. You ask how I know this. Because I was there, I saw it with my own to eyes, for I am the White Wizard, and this is my mountain.

BOATS

BOATS
Boats music has lyrics about dismemberment(the good kind),excellent posture, and orthodontic surgery. A junky indie-pop band with high-end hopes but low-end equipment(total net worth of keyboard section:$40,all thrift store finds),Mat Klachefsky’s bizarre vocal chords mixed with his “infectiously catchy” pop songs and boundless energy have been freaking out audiences ever since they released their critically acclaimed first album “Intercontinental Champion” to local audiences in October 2007. Since then they have embarked on four Canadian tours, played a packed houses at SXSW,NXNE,Pop Montreal,WCMA’s and Sled Island, and charted solidly all across Canada.
Boats just finished recording their 2nd full length album “Cannonballs, Cannonballs” which will be released in May.
This album will take you to the beautiful bizarre world where; kids protect their summercamp from a fake mustache tree,TV shows are broadcast on the sides of buildings and Olympic ski jumpers dot the horizon. Including a duet about a fictional performing team: Smokestack who has a hole in his body; and Lucy who thinks she will be the mother of a flock of birds (but won’t) (Smokestack & Lucy’s Magnificent Cabaret) They are excited to take the rest of the universe to their world of complete, beautiful nonsense again.

Ashley Roch – Keyboards/Trumpet
Ryan McVeigh – Guitar/Other Stuff
Louis Levesque-Cote – Bass

RAH RAH

Rah Rah's sophomore album, Breaking Hearts was recorded and mixed in Montreal by Kees Dekker (Plants & Animals) and was released on June 1, 2010 in Canada. It follows the widespread industry praise for 2008’s debut album, Going Steady and reinforces the increasing visibility that has accompanied Rah Rah’s relentless tour schedule. Rah Rah were crowned “Best New Canadian Band” and “Best New Alternative Band” by iTunes in 2009. The band has also been featured as Itunes Download of the Week and Starbucks Pick of the Week in Canada.
The band members share a collective mentality, taking turns taking the lead, both in songwriting and while on stage, and constantly switching instruments. The proud prairie rockers sing of the seriousness of art, poetry, love and politics, and contrast it with a stage full of confetti, pinatas, candy, and six friends loving life and having fun. But don’t let their fresh faces, confetti cannons and constant sugar highs fool you, Rah Rah are old souls. This young, seven-member ensemble artfully bridge sincerity with the absurd. Despite lyrics that touch on underwater sea creatures, stockbrokers, Saskatchewan (and now Montreal), and impressionist painters - their songs are built to break your heart. All this along with the melodic male/female vocals and diverse instrumentation (guitars, bass, drums, keys, violin, accordion, ukulele), ensures that a Rah Rah show will not disappoint.

Rah Rah has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with the likes of DD/MM/YYYY, Library Voices, Minus the Bear, Cuff the Duke, Zeus, Holy Fuck, Elliott Brood, Wintersleep, Mother Mother, Malajube, Rural Alberta Advantage, Sunparlour Players and Young Galaxy to name a few.

We've also been lucky enough to play events like the Regina Folk Festival, Pop Montreal, Sled Island, the 2010 Vancouver Cultural Olympiad and NXNE.

Rah Rah thanks SaskMusic for their support...

Rah Rah Press:

"The new record (Breaking Hearts) expands beyond the debut’s indie folk vibes to incorporate a wider range of moods" – NOW Magazine

"With vocal singalongs, duets, cheers and chants, Breaking Hearts is relentlessly kinetic and infectiously catchy...By the end, all the oohs and aahs are enough to melt even the most hardened cynic’s cold, cold heart" - FFWD Magazine

"The band members playfully mimed out key lyrics, sprayed listeners with confetti and smashed a pinata to bits, all while creating an addictive wall of sound with their various instruments. The crowd ate this up, and by gig's end, it felt a little like attending a raucous high school house party hosted by a band of misfits" - CBC.ca

“Very accomplished despite their youth, Rah Rah plays immense, poetic rock tunes…” -Montreal Gazette

“There’s no doubt that Rah Rah are Canadian. Their beyond catchy but blunt rock songs were dressed with keyboards and violins, and in a very Weakerthans-esque manner they brought their awkward sing-along inducing live performance to a crowded audience at the Boat that couldn’t help but clap along! It leads me to believe in the near future we’ll be hearing a lot more from these prairie dwellers.” - Exclaim

“There's just something compelling about this band, whether it's Burns's earnest delivery (shades of a baritone Neil Young), the catchy tunes underpinned by rock solid musicianship, or the fact that one of their songs calls for a sound effect created by chewing candy into the microphone.” - ChartAttack

“I honestly don't know what to say about it beyond that it's really, really good, and it absolutely deserves to be heard by a wider audience.” - i(heart)music

"Going Steady’s a realistic, vivid lament on the frustrations of young love" - NOW

THE KETTLE BLACK,HIPPIE CRITZ,JENNY OMNICHORD,RICHARD LAVIOLETTE

Ever since I was a young child, I`ve dreamed of being a T-shirt salesman. But how to make my dream a reality ? I thought, the best way to do this would be to start a band. We called ourselves "Jack Feels Fine" we practiced; we played; we toured; we made a record; we toured some more; then we broke up. I built a recording studio and recorded other bands for awhile. I recorded "Bystander" a studio project and started "Capital Punishment" an internet record company. "The Askmasters" were looking for a bass player and asked me to join. Once again, we practiced; we played; we recorded an album; then we broke up. In the summer of 2002 "Bystander" went to play the NXNE music festival in Toronto, but by the summer of 2003 "Bystander" had broken up (and I was the only member)
Now I am called "The Kettle Black" and I own the dot com to prove it. I finished my first recording 2004 and I`m playing shows again. I play acoustic and electric guitars, bass and synth/piano, I use samples, a couple of loop stations and a drum machine. Someone said it sounded like Mr.Wrong and Neil Young jamming with Roland (formerly of Big Black) in Roger Waters living room. I don`t know but it sure is nice to be back on the road selling my T-shirts again.

"Jenny Omnichord" is a solo side-project of 25 year-old Jenny Mitchell, vocalist, song-writer and multi-instrumentalist for Guelph, Ontario's noted young indie band The Barmitzvah Brothers. In fact, it was the purchase of an omnichord in Jenny's father's thrift store 8 years ago that set her along this path, its carnivalesque, slightly Hebraic sounds leading two young gentile girls to pick the somewhat ironic "Barmitzvah Brothers" as the name for their band.
And while Jenny subsequently branched off into other instruments, among them bass and electric guitars, trumpet, banjo, and keyboards, it is the omnichord that has always remained her first love, a slightly geeky invention played by almost no one, capable of a myriad of sounds and effects, and for some reason scorned or unknown or ignored for almost all of its life. Well, now, it is time for the omnichord to take its rightful position among the upper echelons of musical instruments, and Jenny shall be the liberator who shall set it free, the vessel through whom this most intricate of the keys shall finally achieve the appreciation and respect that it so richly deserves.
Or not. Come what may, Jenny will still continue to love and play it, will try to learn even more of its many and hidden secrets, and will keep trying to bring its joyful wonders to the world, whether we are ready or not. So be prepared to smile, to be amazed and to be bewildered. The omnichord is coming, and we will all be the better for it.
Richard Laviolette writes a hundred songs a year. His songs are consistent in their clever heartfelt rolling lyrics sung by Laviolette’s beautiful dream voice, wrapping audiences and listeners in his sounds. Echo and melody. Laviolette’s voice is a deep well of water. His lyrics are brilliant scraps of paper. Letters written home. He sings about death, anti-colonial struggle and long distance relationships. His voice carries audience’s hearts somewhere else, so their feet can’t be moved and they are forced to stand where they are and just listen

HOMAGE & DJ FREEMAN

Early in my career, I used to refer to myself as Homage "the Halfrican Cracker".
I wasn't ever too sure if some people found that overly offensive. When it was admitted to me on some rare occasions that it WAS offensiveness for particular audience members, I wasn't certain if it was The "Halfrican" part or the "Cracker"ending of the title. All humour and political correctness aside, that definition has always been a close approximation of what I felt I am,as an artist, but more importantly as a human being.Nowadays I refrain from the term, having been an Artist-in-Residence within public schools where such words are obviously inappropriate for children.
Originally from South Africa, where racial boundaries amongst slave bloodlines is often blurred, my brother "FreeMoney" and I are European-looking Canadians involved in the so-called "Black" art of Hiphop music and dance. For the record,I always take the opportunity to celebrate cultural
differences, but I don't really believe in race, either than the human race that is.
I find it very interesting that in many African languages, there is no distinction between the activities of singing, dancing and making music. In many instances, they all shared the exact same word, which is telling.
My brother and I will engage in this multi-dimensional act of:Singing/rapping, dancing and creating Music. It will NOT resemble a typical Hiphop performance whatsoever, nor any other performance one may have seen.
